Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) in central New Jersey has been specifically designed to help individuals who have experienced a cardiac episode to regain their strength and return to their normal routines. Each patient is supervised by cardiac rehab nurses and an exercise specialist to assure his or her safety and fitness throughout the workout. The goal is to meet each individual's needs, including returning to the highest level of independence as possible while improving quality of life and gaining peace of mind.
JRI's NJ Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a 12- to 18-week hospital-based outpatient program with medical supervision. Cardiac rehab combines education, exercise, diet and healthy lifestyle changes in a supportive environment. Each session is designed to meet the individual's needs in a safe environment. We offer the latest exercise equipment in our New Jersey outpatient facilities, including treadmills, bikes, arm ergometers, rowers and NuStep Cross Trainers. Each patient is electronically monitored through a state-of-the-art wireless cardiac monitor worn during the exercise session.
Candidates for JRI's NJ Cardiac Rehabilitation Program are those who have had a heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, stable angina, angioplasty, stents placement, or heart transplant. To enter the program, patients need a prescription from a physician and the results of a graded exercise stress test and lipid profile. Together with the patient, our staff determines appropriate goals and initiates exercise to help achieve those goals. Cardiac rehabilitation helps patients lead active, productive lives.
At the conclusion of JRI's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, two choices for maintaining exercise are available:
- The step-down program allows the individual to continue exercising with the same staff and remain in the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute in Edison, NJ.
- Patients also have the option of making a transition to the JFK Health and Fitness Center located across the street from the JFK Medical Center. The fitness center offers a wide range of programs in a casual, comfortable, family-oriented atmosphere with state-of-the-art equipment. Our cardiac rehabilitation staff and Fitness Center staff work closely together to provide satisfying exercise experiences for every individual.
